Solidarity with Rojava from Johannesburg, South AfricaOctober 13, 2019
12 October was the Global Action Day against the Turkish occupation and ethnic cleansing of Kurds in North and East Syria. Read our previous post for more. Some of us met up at The Commune, a new radical leftist bookstore in Johannesburg, South Africa, to think, talk and collaborate on how we could possibly show solidarity with our comrades in Rojava, currently under attack by fascist Turkey.
We shared coffee and conversation, talking and reading about the current situation and what we could do to show solidarity, and how else we could help. The situation feels quite frustrating because it feels like displays of solidarity are all many of us can do short of actually going to Rojava.
We wrote, printed and folded pamphlets, and distributed them. These are available from The Commune. You can also download this PDF version if you would like to print your own. We handed these out on the streets.
We made hundreds of pin badges. These are also available at The Commune.
We also made a big banner saying “South Africa Shows Solidarity with Rojava. Savaşa ve işgale hayir! (No war or occupation)”. We took a photo in solidarity and then took the banner to a street party, where we walked from one end to the other and back, handing out pamphlets and talking to people along the way.
Our hopes are that our actions can provide even a little morale to our comrades in Rojava and around the world.
Against hierarchy, fascism and domination! For equality, freedom and collective liberation!
