Women Defend Rojava – Self-defence: The Answer to Gender ViolenceMarch 26, 2020
We were sent the following email by our comrades in Rojava, Women Defend Rojava. While we understand that framing self-defense as “the answer” to gender-based violence could in some contexts be seen as a form of victim blaming or putting the onus on womxn to solve the problem rather than addressing the root causes, we also believe in finding ways to be empowered and take back control under oppressive systems. Please have a look at the pamphlet and help share the information with others.
Dear friends and comrades,
Recently we have seen increasing violence against women and rising cases of femicide. At the same time, we can also observe the growing resistance to this patriarchal violence.
We as Kongra Star, women’s movement in Rojava, are following this increasing systematic violence, but also the organisation of resistance against it. Be it the struggle of women in Chile against the neo-liberal politics of the government or the Bosnian women demanding justice against the femicide during the Bosnian war. It is the Afghan women who fight against fundamentalism and for their rights. And it is the Kurdish women who fight against occupation.
Against this increasing patriarchal mentality and violence, self-defence is necessary.
For this reason, we have published a brochure on the topic “Self-defence: The Answer to Gender Violence.”
With solidarity greetings
